Field notes on eight Calgary-area casinos

Eight casinos stand in and around Calgary. Each has its own note here, written in the same order and checked against the venue's own site, with the gaps in the record left visible rather than filled.

Eight venues, one region

The notes cover Elbow River Casino, Cowboys Casino, ACE Casino Blackfoot, PURE Casino Calgary, Grey Eagle Resort & Casino, ACE Casino Airport, Deerfoot Inn & Casino and Century Downs Racetrack & Casino. Six are inside the city. Grey Eagle stands on Tsuut'ina Nation land and is owned and operated by the Nation. Century Downs lies outside the city limits, with a Rocky View address.

They are not one kind of place. Elbow River sits at the corner of 17th Avenue and Macleod Trail, close to Victoria Park / Stampede CTrain station. PURE Casino Calgary is the only casino in the northeast. ACE Casino Airport is off Deerfoot and Airport Trail, beside the Clique Hotel. Grey Eagle is a resort with a hotel and an event centre, and Century Downs shares its grounds with a live racetrack. As of October 2026, its Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse meet runs to October 31.

The full list, with a link to each note, appears below this introduction. Read in any order; each note stands on its own.

How each note is laid out

Every note follows the same three blazes, so a reader can move between venues without relearning the trail.

  • Hours. When the main floor opens and closes, and, where the venue publishes them, separate hours for table games, the poker room and the restaurants. Some casinos list different hours on different pages of their own site; when that happens, the note says so and does not choose between them.
  • Getting in. Alberta's gambling age is 18. Under AGLC rules, casino staff ask for valid government-issued photo ID from anyone who appears to be under 25. Loyalty sign-up, where the venue describes it, is noted here too.
  • Getting there. Address, parking and transit, as far as the venue or Calgary Transit publishes them. Several venues publish no transit route at all, and the note says that plainly.

Where a reader might expect a detail the official sources do not give, such as a dress code, a table count or holiday hours, the note says the venue publishes it, or does not, and points to the official site. How sources are weighed is set out in Field method.

For a live view of which venues are open at this moment, go to the field guide home page. For early starts, see Morning hours; for buses and trains, Without a car.

A casino visit is best planned with a set budget and an end time. If gambling has stopped feeling like a pastime, 211 (call or text) and the Addiction Helpline (Recovery Alberta) at 1-866-332-2322 are free and open around the clock. More is on Play safe.

Field questions

Questions

Why do some field notes leave out numbers such as table counts or bus routes?

The notes only state what the venue or an official body publishes. When sources disagree or a figure appears only on outside listings, the number is left out and the note points to the venue's own site.

Where can I see which Calgary casinos are open right now?

The home page of the guide shows a live open or closed view based on each venue's published hours. Hours can change, so the venue's own site remains the final word.
